Here, the audience extends beyond your followers to include users TikTok believes would be interested in your content. The FYP is your chance to reach a new audience, increase video engagement, and potentially go viral.

What Does FYP Mean on TikTok?

The FYP is the first page you see when you open the TikTok app. This page shows a feed of videos from creators you may or may not follow based on your past interactions (including likes, shares, and comments). For instance, if you click like on a few videos of apartment tours, the app will show you more of these videos on your FYP.

The FYP also plays a vital role in making content go viral on TikTok. Even creators with small followings can gain large audiences if they reach the FYP and see high engagement. The TikTok For You Page algorithm interprets this interaction as a sign of good content and recommends it to even more users on their FYPs. From there, it can reach new audiences, earn more likes, and potentially go viral. One viral video is all it takes to quickly make creators famous and earn them thousands of followers.

How Does the TikTok FYP Algorithm Work?

The algorithm considers three main things when showing content on the FYP:

1. Interactions

TikTok wants to keep users active on its platform and considers videos that receive more likes, shares, and comments engaging. As a result, TikTok is more likely to promote these videos to a broader audience on FYPs, where more people can watch and interact with them.

The time users spend watching a TikTok also matters. If users watch an entire video or stick around to watch it multiple times, TikTok’s algorithm takes it as a sign of high-quality content, which could improve its chances of appearing on the FYP.

2. Location

TikTok considers the location of users when recommending content, aiming to provide content that's relevant to where they are. For example, content promoting an event in LA would be most relevant to people in that location, so TikTok would primarily show it to users located there.

The algorithm might also notice your interest in a location. If you’re searching for “Best restaurants in NYC” or watching any NYC-related video, you’ll likely see more videos based in that area.

3. Previous Behavior

The algorithm learns from users' past behavior, including content they've searched for, engaged with (liked, commented on, or shared), or shown interest in by watching multiple times. It uses this information to tailor the content on the FYP to align with users' preferences.

Why Should Your Content Be on the FYP?

If you want to build your following on TikTok, getting your content on the FYP is critical. Here’s how appearing on the FYP can help content creators.

1. Increased Visibility

The FYP is where TikTok showcases popular and interesting videos to the people most likely to enjoy them.

When your TikTok video appears on someone’s FYP, you’re reaching a user who doesn’t follow you but is interested in the type of content you post. If they like what they see, it could motivate them to check out your profile and follow you.

2. Engagement

The FYP is the main avenue for content discovery on TikTok. When a TikTok appears on the FYP, it reaches a broad audience of users whose previous actions indicate to TikTok that they might be interested in your content. Since the FYP shows videos based on what users typically want to see, those users are more likely to comment, share, and interact with the video.

3. More Sponsorships

The increased engagement you earn from appearing on the FYP can improve your chances of successful TikTok monetization through sponsorships or brand deals. Because the TikTok algorithm features content on the FYP based on metrics like shares and comments, constantly reaching the FYP indicates that your videos receive high engagement. This makes sponsors more likely to partner with you since it proves that audiences enjoy and engage with your content, taking actions like sharing your videos — and potentially buying the sponsor's product.

4. Potential for Viral Content

If a video on the FYP sees a lot of engagement, the algorithm is more likely to promote it further, leading to greater visibility and even more engagement — known as the snowball effect. This effect leads to viral content. Here's how it works:

  1. The video grabs viewers’ attention, gaining many views, likes, and other engagement.
  2. High engagement rates signal to the algorithm that the content is good.
  3. The algorithm promotes the video on the FYP, increasing views, likes, and other engagement even more.
  4. The cycle continues, and eventually, the video goes viral.

3 Tips To Get on the FYP on TikTok

To get your content on the FYP, you must prioritize TikTok SEO, which means optimizing your video for TikTok’s algorithm and search function.

The first step is posting content consistently — the more you post, the better your chances of appearing on the FYP. TikTok suggests posting 1–4 times a day. Posting often signals to TikTok’s algorithm that your content is fresh, making it more likely to be featured on the FYP.

Here are a few more TikTok tips to improve your chances of appearing on the FYP:

1. Use Trending TikTok Hashtags

Hashtags are like labels that categorize and organize videos. When people search for topics that match your hashtag, your video can appear, increasing its discoverability. Trending hashtags become very popular within a specific period.

Using these trending hashtags is like joining a popular conversation to make your voice heard by a bigger group. Your post becomes part of that larger conversation. More people will see, like, or share your post, helping it reach a wider audience.

Here’s how to find trending hashtags:

  • Use the Discover Tab to do a TikTok Search You'll see a search bar at the top of the Discover tab. If you search for keywords relevant to your videos, you'll see related hashtags that similar videos use so you can decide whether they match your content.

2. Upload at the Best Time To Post on TikTok

It’s a good idea to post when more people are active on TikTok — if a larger audience sees your content, it should get more likes, comments, and more.

Research by Social Pilot suggests these are the best times to post on TikTok in Eastern Standard Time:

  • Monday — 6am, 10am, and 10pm
  • Tuesday — 2am, 4am, and 9am
  • Wednesday — 7am, 8am, and 11pm
  • Thursday — 9am, 12am, and 7pm
  • Friday — 5am, 1pm, and 3pm
  • Saturday — 11am, 7pm, and 8pm
  • Sunday — 7am, 8am, and 4pm

While these times are generally the most popular, here’s how to figure out the best posting times for your account:

  1. Switch to a Business TikTok Account — A Business account gives you access to TikTok Analytics, a tool that offers insights into your account's performance, including when your audience is most active. You can time your posts to match when more of your followers are online for better results.
  2. Check Follower Activity in TikTok Analytics — In the Followers tab, check when your followers are most active during the week and on which days. Since your audience will be active, they are likely to interact with your content — increasing your views, likes, and more.

3. Use Trending Sounds

TikTok users often search for and explore content with trending songs — popular and widely used tracks that many users are including in their videos. Hopping on trending audios increases the chances of users discovering your content when they’re actively looking for content with those tracks.

If you make TikTok videos with these trending sounds, TikTok’s algorithm could see the video as one that users want to see and show it on the FYP, where more people can discover it.
